Position: Coordinator for Residential Education and Leadership

Why are you nominating this person?  Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

Laura Dorfman demonstrated all the qualities of a true Division of Student Affairs STAR by enthusiastically accepting the role and challenges of co-Rose Float Coordinator when OSLCC  was without a Senior Coordinator for Rose Float.  She went “above and beyond” the call of duty in her regular day to day work.  OSLCC asked for her specifically, because we always knew that Laura Dorfman was a hard worker.  That was shared with OSLCC from several others in the division of student affairs, but what they failed to say was that she is a BRILLIANT worker as well.  Laura provided the Rose Float Committee with the support, advising and mentorship to keep them motivated and excited in spite of the challenges that came their way.  Laura worked extremely well with the Rose Float Team.  She was very good at keeping everyone updated on the float progress, she managed issues and conflicts professionally, and she jumped in whenever there was a gap in the process.  The greatest thing Laura did for the Rose Float Committee was to give them the reassurance and validation that the campus supports what they do.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1: Student-Centered Philosophy

The students genuinely appreciated Laura’s leadership.  She grew to admire and bond with our Rose Float students.  Her connection with students working on the rose float was visible every time she spoke of them or them of her.  The thing that was most admired about her through this process is that all of OSLCC got to see “up close” how much of an impact she truly has on students.  The year

started out “rocky” because of a student leader having growing pains in a leadership role.  Laura never gave up on that student and gave that student the challenge and support needed to “grow up” and make leadership style adjustments.  Laura sincerely believes in “student development” and we all know that it doesn’t happen without the dedicated commitment of student affairs professionals like Laura.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2: Interconnectedness

There were two things that were incredibly impressive while Laura performed her collaborative work with OSLCC and UHS.  First was her ability to manage both of the positions so well.  She seemed to always be on top of everything in both departments.  It was as if she modeled the true essence of interconnectedness.  The second was the excitement and passion she developed for Rose Float, and then integrating it with her knowledge of how housing could partner and support the program.  Technically she was assigned 20% time to the rose float project, but because of OSLCC’s need, she gave more of her time and stayed positive throughout the whole experience.   A true STAR is someone that can produce 100% percent quality on 20% allocated time.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #3: Passion

Laura’s passion seemed to stem from working with the students as well as her inner thirst to learn new things, and she tackled and learned an inordinate amount of new things!  While working with Laura, it became quickly clear that she was vested and passionate about her new Rose Float role. She embraced her new duties with a great amount of respect and vigor.  She worked hard and although she had her Housing duties and had many balls to juggle, she never let that stand in her way of fulfilling expectations above and beyond the call of duty.  On paper, she committed to spending 20% of her allocated work time co-coordinating the Rose Float.  In reality, she spent much more than that and most of it she did on her “own time” on the weekends and in the evenings.  Laura really came to love the PROCESS of building the float and she was well respected by the Tournament of Roses officials, who came to rely on her as a solid professional.

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?

Laura was the glue that help keep the Rose Float program afloat this year.  Without having any prior knowledge of the Rose Float program operations, she enthusiastically stepped up to learn the operations quickly to ensure that the long standing CPP tradition of entering a float into the Tournament of Roses parade would not be broken and successful.  Through the current and difficult budgetary times our campus is currently experiencing, Laura has served as an exceptional role model and consummate professional to all other staff by remaining positive and dedicated to the successful completion of all her duties.  It is without question that she contributed to further the success of the CPP campus community and she went well above the call of duty co-coordinating the Rose Float program.
