Why are you nominating this person? Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

Maria is a valuable asset to the EOP Admissions and Enrollment Services (AES) unit. She has taken on her role as EOP Outreach and Admissions Counselor with enthusiasm and learning spirit. She prepares presentations to fit the population she will be presenting to, from middle school to college age students. She motivates current EOP students to join her in presentations which allows for peer identification with audience, this also is a learning opportunity for our current EOP students.
She is an excellent team player in our area, updating communication with our current EOP applicants as it applies to their status, assisting with ideas to streamline our process and to ensure we meet our enrollment target. And she brightens up the office with her cheerfulness.

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?

Maria has demonstrated initiative in her recruitment efforts by reaching out to the local community. She has developed new and intentional relations with the local high schools and community organizations, as well as maintaining a continued partnerships with the community colleges. Maria has increased visibility of EOP at private organizations that work with low-income, highly motivated students, such as Bright Prospects, Uncommon Good, and Pomona Hope. Recently she has been a key person in bringing groups on campus, most recently OC Grip Girl, an organization that helps at risk middle school girls. One of the board members found out about Cal Poly Pomona from one of our EOP/Summer Bridge students and immediately got in touch with Maria to schedule an EOP Presentation!

Maria has always demonstrated her passion to work with students. She always looks at the studentsí needs first and has been an excellent advisor and mentor to them. She works closely with them not only in advising them academically but also in their professional development, such as EOP Peer Advisors, and most recently in training our EOP students for presentations. The students demonstrate true respect for Maria and seek her out for advice and baring gifts.

She truly exemplifies the value of Student-Centered Philosophy!

Maria collaborates with Cal Poly Pomona colleges in their recruitment effort such as Agriculture Open House and College of Engineeringís E-Girl Event. Not to mention always being at Preview Day and Show Case of Excellence to speak to prospective students and parents. She also partners with organizations to conduct student and parent presentations, such as the annual MASA Bilingual Parent Conference.
Maria collaborates with the Coordinator of the Asian Pacific Islander Center in recruiting API students as part of the CSU AAPI Initiative. She also Partners with API in the Scholarship Committee and Cultural Graduation Ceremonies.
