Why are you nominating this person?  Why do you think he/she deserves the award?:

I am nominating Mario Rodriguez for the Fall DSA Star Award for his significant leadership and contributions on the First Friday event “Glow Friday” held on October 7, 2011.  Mario put a great deal of time, passion, energy and leadership into this program.  He sought feedback from students, collaborated with various staff members and took the time to see each detail through until the end of the program.  When faced with a change in the event, he remained calm, was flexible and ensured that the students had a quality, fun event to attend during the “First Friday” event. Mario demonstrated a combination of passion, interconnectedness and quality to make “Glow Friday” a success.

Please select 3 of the 6 Division of Student Affairs values for which your nominee best exemplifies: Interconnectedness, Passion, Quality

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1:

Mario "Mr. Passion" Rodriguez utilized passion in various areas to make the "Glow Friday" program a success.  From maintaining a positive attitude throughout the planning process to helping students and his peers to see the value of the program when changes in the event itself occurred.   Mario kept his enthusiasm high from the moment he volunteered help lead the planning of the event to the night of the event.  He always kept the students motivated, excited and had creative ideas for collaborations, and problem solving.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2:

When the opportunity to work with a group of individuals to plan the “Glow Friday” event arose, Mario was the first to volunteer.  The “Glow Friday” program required a commitment to interconnectedness as the program was a collaborative between various members of the Weekend Planning Committee, University Police, Risk Management and Associated Students, Incorporated.  Mario reached out to include departments in the planning of the event.  Mario realized the importance of the collective abilities around him and incorporated them into the planning.  He used his knowledge gained from supporting departments’ programs on-campus and has used those quality connections on-campus to ensure an amazing event for the students.  Mario values interconnectedness and tried to utilize it with both students and staff in the work he does.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #3:

Mario set and achieved a tone of excellence with the “Glow Friday” program and in all programs he works with.  He made quick changes to marketing, kept student momentum moving and added his input towards improving the quality of the event. Mario pays attention to the details necessary to create a quality student experience.  He utilizes his resources around him and works with individuals to make sure each individual is on the same page, both with the vision of the program but also with the specific regarding expectations of the planning of the event.  Mario excels in the area of programming, and the “Glow Friday” event was a prime example of Mario’s programming planning abilities and of his abilities to empower and motivate student volunteers.

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?:

Mario enjoys his campus collaborations, I think, as the highlight of his job.  He currently advises the Montecito Hall Council and Queer Student and Allies For Equality (QSAFE).  He has been involved with Pride Alliance, LFSSA and has been a part of many campus initiatives such as BeSmart, PolyPalooza, Welcome Week, Dia De Las Muertos Committee, Hilda Solis Scholarship Committee, Tunnel of Oppression just to name a few.  Mario enjoys building relationships and spending the quality time necessary to create not only a network of resources, but also friends both in and out of the Division of Student Affairs.  Mario, to me, represents the spirit of Cal Poly Pomona and is a true Bronco!
