Nita Vazquez

I am nominating:  Nita Vazquez

Years of Service at Cal Poly: 3 years

Department:    Disability Resource Center

Position: Deaf/Hard of Hearing Cord/Lead Interpreter

Why are you nominating this person?  Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

Nita is more than a star she is a Rock Star! I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award.  In my six plus years at CPP I have not seen someone more willing to take on more for the good of the department.  Whether it is volunteering to drive our mobility cart when short staffed, working weekends, answering phones or anything else the DRC might need Nita is the first person to step up.  Nita’s attitude is refreshing.  It is welcoming to know you can ask her to do just about anything and her response is always the same, “sure how can I help.”  Nita is charged with coordinating all DRC Deaf/HH Services.  This includes scheduling eighteen THI’s and three fulltime employees.  She is thoughtful in her actions with all whom she coordinates.  She is receptive to feedback and collaboration and is always looking for the best way to serve our students, while staying within or more often under budget!

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?

Nita is committed to both our students and the DRC staff.  When reviewing the values of the DSA it was hard to pick just two, because Nita exemplifies most of them.  She works above and beyond to ensure that the needs of our students are being met, but also keeps the needs of those she coordinates in mind at all times.  She is tasked with the difficulty of appeasing almost twenty interpreters and real time captioners, as well as our DRC students; however, her commitment to doing things right and her can do attitude ensure her success.  Nita is a team player who is willing to step in whenever it is needed.  She is thoughtful, respectful and committed.  She is humble and hardworking.  I am honored to have the opportunity to work with Nita, and feel that she is a strong asset to the Division of Student Affairs.   I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1: Student-Centered

Nita not only serves as our Deaf/HH coordinator but she is also our lead interpreter.  Student success is at the core of what Nita does each and every day.  Nita works very closely with all our Deaf/HH students to ensure that all their needs are being met, while at the same encouraging them to use their own self advocacy skills so that they can be successful at CPP.  Nita is a tireless advocate for our students.  She regularly communicates and works with faculty to ensure that our students receive accessible course material, and goes out of her way to ensure that all students are provided equal access in the classroom! Nita makes all decisions with the best interest of the student in mind.  She is patient and attentive even with some of our most challenging students.  Whether flying up to San Francisco to interpret for a last minute field trip or driving four plus hours to Santa Barbara in traffic for a walking tour, Nita ensures that interpreting is provided for each student whenever it is needed.  Nita’s priority is our students and her actions and commitment reflect this.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2: Integrity

Nita is tasked with the difficulty of coordinating eighteen hourly employees and three full time staff, but her integrity enables her to not only meet the demands of our students but also our Deaf/HH staff.  With so many moving parts, Nita is often juggling many different issues at once.  However, before making any decisions she thoroughly researches the issue and will often collaborate with others before reaching a conclusion.  She respects the input of both students and staff and is always seeking new and innovative ways to meet the needs of our students.  Nita is quick to give credit where credit is due, and will not hesitate to praise those individuals who are flexible and willing to do what is in the best interest of our department.  She has a caring and approachable demeanor and is respectful to both our students and staff even when faced with sometimes difficult scenarios.  Nita leads by example.  She maintains her professionalism at all times and addresses all issues transparently and head on.  Her commitment to doing what is right is greatly respected by all she comes in contact with.
