Rico Cortez

Summer 2012

I am nominating: Rico Cortez
Years of Service at Cal Poly: 6
Department: University Police, University Police
Position: Police Officer

Why are you nominating this person? Why do you think he/she deserves the award?:
Officer Cortez exemplifies the concept of partnership policing. This concept entails moving beyond simple community relations. In partnership policing it is the aim of the police officer to assist everyone on campus in succeeding with their goals - beyond mere provision of public safety. Cortez
does this on a daily basis.

Please select 3 of the 6 Division of Student Affairs values for which your nominee best exemplifies: Interconnectedness, Passion, Quality

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1:
One can speak with most any administrator or staff member on campus and they will know "Officer Rico." He has done more than just establish working relationships with these members of the campus community, they are now friends and true partners. Cortez gets out of his car and makes more than cursory contacts with those he encounters, often resulting in another mutually beneficial partnership.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2:
In a time when all university employees are given more tasks than they can handle, Cortez volunteers for more. On many occasions he has come to his Sergeant, the Lieutenant or the Chief with an offer to take on yet another project or committee. Cortez is an enthusiastic presenter, often found giving safety
information to audiences of students or staff members. In each case he imparts not only the topical information at hand, but a sense of partnership between the police department and those involved in the presentation.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #3:
For the past three years Rico has also had responsibilities as the School Resource Officer for I-Poly
High School. He adapted to this role well, and has earned the praise of Principal Elsa Martinez and other school officials. His interactions with these students have been effective and have helped these young people have a positive view of law enforcement.

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?: The campus community expects a safe environment and has confidence in the police departments ability to provide it. Officer Cortez goes beyond this expectation, and develops partners throughout
the campus. These partnerships not only contribute to campus safety, but in some sense they help each partner accomplish their goals at the same time.
