Sharon Rocacorba

Winter 2014

I am nominating:   Sharon Rocacorba

Years of Service at Cal Poly: 4.5

Department: Office of Student Life & Cultural Centers

Position:   Coordinator for Greek Life & Education

Why are you nominating this person?  Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

Sharon Rocacorba is more than a STAR, she is a SUPER STAR!  In just one year as the full-time, permanent Coordinator for Greek Life & Education, Sharon has already started to make a difference in our Greek Life program as well as all of OSLCC.  Sharon has done a phenomenal job of instilling the importance of Greek unity and inclusivity.  An example of this is the implementation of the first ever all council leadership retreat, where leaders from all Greek sub councils come together to collaborate and learn about each other at the beginning of the academic year.  She has great attention to detail and truly grasps the ideals of inclusion and social justice which she instills in her student population on a daily basis.  Sharon is a go-getter who works feverishly to set the best example for our students and her colleagues.

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?

Sharon has already changed the culture and thought process in the Greek Life campus community to be inclusive of cultures, respectful towards diversity and truly make it “student centered.” Sharon spends endless nights and weekends working with not only the Cal Poly Pomona community, but with local city communities doing philanthropy work that makes CPP shine! The most recent example of Sharon’s contribution to the CPP campus community was during our recent 75th Anniversary Homecoming celebration.  Sharon collaborated with the Greek community on the Up ‘Til Dawn Fundraising event for St. Jude’s Research Hospital to help find a cure for children with cancer.  Sharon literally stayed up all night long with several hundred students in the BSC.  Their efforts resulted in raising over $42,000 which the most ever raised by CPP and doubling what was raised last year. Sharon thrives in making everyone's experience in working with her a complete joy!

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1:

Integrity:  Working with Sharon is SUCH a pleasure!!  She works collaboratively with others both within OSLCC and beyond on serious issues that sometimes show students at their worst.  Despite dealing with situations that sometimes seem bleak at the start, Sharon maintains a positive attitude and optimism.  Sharon’s earnest and genuine belief in each student’s ability to learn/grow/develop is ever-present.  Sharon is caring, honest, and open.  Not being a Greek student herself as an undergraduate in college, Sharon believes in the Greek community and the students that are a part of it.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2:

Passion:  Sharon is very passionate about working with students, and in any role that she takes on.  She is a great leader and mentor to her students because she is able to connect at their level, but still guide them in the correct way.   Sharon is always investing in her student's learning and self-awareness. She engages with students and empowers them to learn from their involvement.  Sharon exudes energy and spunk (with professionalism) in keeping students accountable for their actions and providing them with those “teaching moments” to help them learn and develop into responsible citizens.  She sets The BAR extremely high for everyone else when it comes to exhibiting passion.  As an OSLCC team member, Sharon is always willing to step up and to take on additional tasks.  In fact, she is typically the first to do so.  She always has great insight and ideas for ways in which OSLCC can improve or do things differently as a team.
