I am nominating: Veronica Calvary
Years of Service at Cal Poly: 4
Department: Disability Resource Center
Position: Administrative Assistant
Why are you nominating this person? Why do you think he/she deserves the award?: I am nominating Veronica, because she is one of the unsung heroes of our department. This past year our department went through a few transitions, which predominantly impacted Veronica. Although she was impacted, she continued to do her job with a smile and kept the best interest of our students at heart. She is deserving of the STAR award because she goes the extra mile to help students, faculty, staff, and fellow co-workers. This is reflected by her student centered and interconnected approach, which is carried out with integrity.
Please select 3 of the 6 Division of Student Affairs values for which your nominee best exemplifies: Student-Centered Philosophy, Integrity, Interconnectedness
Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1: Student Centered:
Veronica exemplifies our division’s student centered philosophy. She creates a warm and welcoming environment for our students and not only greets each student with kindness and respect, but addresses each student by name, making them feel at home. She strives to create an equitable environment for all of our students and advocates for those in need of an extra helping hand. Many of our students rely on Veronica and appreciate her presence and assistance. The reason why so many of our students rely on Veronica is because of her warm personality and through this; she has
established trust and understanding with each of our students. There are
times when students are inquiring about issues that are outside of our department. Veronica takes the time to work with these students to guide them in the appropriate direction and/or find out the correct information for the student. Veronica is truly a genuine student centered representative of the University.
Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2: Integrity: Veronica works with the utmost integrity. She creates a safe environment for our students, which in turn, has created a foundation of trust between Veronica and our students. She also works with confidential and sensitive information and handles each case with honesty and integrity. Veronica has always been up front with our students and staff and takes responsibility and ownership of her actions. Veronica has integrity because she is fair and consistent. She treats each student, faculty, guest, and staff member with warmth and respect.
Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #3: Interconnectedness:
Through collaboration, Veronica shines in interconnectedness. As a colleague, I know I can rely on Veronica to genuinely lend a helping hand or to be of support. I am personally appreciative that Veronica has assisted me multiple times since I’ve reduced my work hours. When I am not available, Veronica will help resolve an issue instead of letting it wait until I return. Some examples include, helping out students with registration issues and assisting our notetakers with the hiring process.
She works outside of the box because she is connected and is simply not going through the “motions” of her job. Veronica also collaborates with other staff members as well. An example is her active participation in weekly Case Consultation meetings, where she provides invaluable insight regarding student interactions/behaviors.
In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?: Veronica enhances the campus community simply by
being herself, warm, caring, and respectful. This past year we have had
some staffing changes which impacted Veronica. She graciously embraced her new responsibilities and was flexible and patient during these times. She also continued to do everything with a smile. During these transitions she always kept the best interest of the student at hand which is why she is a shining star. I am proud to be working side by side with such a wonderful well-rounded person!
