What is ESP?

What is ESP?

The goals of Early Start is to better prepare students in math and English before their first year, thereby supporting student long term success. Participation and placement in Early Start is determined by various college entrance exam scores (SAT/ACT/EAP/AP) and students will be notified of this requirement beginning late February. More details to come regarding the criteria by which students are required to participate in Early Start in 2018. Early Start courses do not impact a student's GPA nor do they count toward graduation credit; however, ESP courses do count toward students' enrollment and financial aid minimum unit requirements.

Sstudents that are required to participate in Early Start for English will be notified of their requirement to complete ESE5, a two-week online course. ESE5 course instructors and tutors will also help students make an informed decision about which English course sequence is best for them to take during their first Fall term.

Students that are required to participate in Early Start for math will be notified of their math course placement. Depending on their exam scores, some students may be required to complete more than one math courses before they are eligible to take a math GE course that meets their major requirements. Some students will be opt to complete up to two levels of college preparatory courses in the summer, while some students may opt to complete just one and take their next required course in the Fall.
