First Year Experience Course Outcomes and Expectations

All courses that intend to use Student Success Fee First Year Programming Funds must demonstrate through their Expanded Course Outline that they address the topics listed below and include the indicated requirements, assignments, and activities.


Students will demonstrate a commitment to and a responsibility for their own education.

The class must address:

  • academic expectations of the college and university
  • learning strategies and study skills
  • academic planning and advising

The class must include:

  • assignment to create personal roadmap

 

Students will understand the relationship of their education to their personal and professional development.

The class must address:

  • assessment of skills, interests, and goals with respect to majors
  • physical, social, and financial wellness

The class must include:

  • activity to explore current or future plans in major

 

Students will develop the skills to work cooperatively in diverse communities and build a strong support network of faculty, staff, and peers.

The class must address:

  • importance of diverse set of engagement activities with faculty and students to develop effective interpersonal skills and create campus connections

The class must include:

  • requirement to participate in one or more co-curricular activities.

 

Students will develop information literacy skills to enhance their academic and personal success.

The class must address:

  • library resources
  • campus information resources

The class must include:

  • library activity

 

Students will develop an appreciation of intellectual inquiry.

The class must address:

  • academic entry level expectations in the area of oral and written communications and critical thinking or problem solving.

The class must include:

  • common read
  • multiple significant writing assignments that allow students to apply feedback
