Chairman of State Senate Panel Visits Campus
The chairman of a state Senate panel on veterans affairs was briefed about issues facing student veterans during a visit to Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 27.
State Sen. Josh Newman, who represents District 29, took a tour of the renovated Veterans Resource Center with Ron Coley, a retired Marine Corps officer and husband of the university president, and Elke Azpeitia, coordinator of veterans services at the center.
Newman is chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, which oversees bills relating to veterans, military affairs, armories, and the Military and Veterans Code.
Like Coley, Newman also served in the military. He was a U.S. Army officer and served on assignments in South Korea.
Newman also founded ArmedForce2Workforce, a nonprofit organization that assists young veterans with career placement.
