An animal science major participated in a national conference for college students interested in discovering more about careers in the food industry.

Irene Ngo was chosen through an essay contest to attend the Agriculture Future of America Food Institute, Jan. 27-29.

Ngo, who is also minoring in food safety and serving as a college peer advisor, wanted to attend the institute to gain more networking opportunities and talk with industry representatives.

“I am not too sure as to what my future career goals are as of right now, but I switched from wanting to pursue veterinary school to wanting to pursue a career in food science or just work in the food or some sort of agriculture industry,” the senior said.

At the institute, the Buena Park native participated in career roundtables and went on industry tours of research and development laboratories and production facilities. She connected with industry professionals, as well as other students.

The experience provided her with a wealth of insight into different careers.

“The biggest thing I learned from this trip was just that there are so many opportunities for advancement in the food industry and there are so many sectors in the food industry that anyone can dive into and learn,” Ngo said. “I will utilize what I have learned to hone in on what my interests are and find my own career path.”

Founded in 1996, AFA offers leadership and career development training and scholarships to students interested in agriculture-related careers.

The Kansas City-based organization puts on several leader institutes during the year on different topics, including technology, policy, animals, and crop science. The organization covers hotel, meals, and programs costs. Students are responsible for travel expenses.
