ABM Students Attend Conference

Lecturer Katie Horvath and students at the NGA Show

Three agribusiness and food industry management students attended the 2019 National Grocers Association Show in San Diego on Feb. 24-26.

Gerardo Barragan, Jayme Moreno, and Isaiah Barbosa, who are on the ABM Club Executive Board, were paired with mentors from the grocery industry and walked the trade show floor with them.

The National Grocers Association is the national trade association representing independent retail and wholesale grocers. The annual NGA Show brings members together with food retail industry executives, manufacturers and service providers for networking and education.

In addition to offering mentoring opportunities for students, the NGA Show also had a case study competition for student teams with the opportunity to address a real-world issue the industry is grappling with.

Although the Cal Poly Pomona students did not compete in it this year, the Department of Agribusiness and Food Industry Management/Agricultural Science plans to have a class (ABM 3060 - Wholesale & Retail Class) participate next year.

The students also participated in the Women Grocers of America 5K Fun Run/Walk to support scholarships for students pursuing careers in the independent supermarket industry.

The students were accompanied by Professor Jon Phillips, the department chair, and Lecturer Katie Horvath. All expenses were paid for by the National Grocers Association Education Foundation.

It's the second industry conference that agribusiness and food industry management students attended in February.

Several agribusiness and food industry management students attended the UNFI Retail Trade Show on Feb. 12 at the Long Beach Convention Center.

The students, accompanied by Horvath, got to meet food manufacturers, food brokers, and Cal Poly Pomona alumni, and witness sales negotiations and business deals first hand.

It was a great experience and window into grocery retail and the complexities of managing many different categories of a supermarket.
