Meet an Arabian horse at a celebration of the Cal Poly Pomona Sunday Horse Show on Oct. 6.

The university’s W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center has planned a series of festivities to celebrate the first horse show of the academic year, including opportunities for the public to meet the magnificent Arabian Horses and learn more about the bond between animals and humans.

“It’s a great way for people to see the horses up close and to learn more about these animals and what we do here at Cal Poly Pomona,” said John Lambert, the center’s new executive director.

Events begin with “Meet an Arabian Horse” Day from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., hosted by the Region One Arabian Horse Association. Visitors can touch an Arabian horse and learn about the breed’s history, versatility and personality. They also can connect with local Arabian horse trainers and discover how to get involved with local lessons available to the public.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Education Professor Aubrey Fine, an expert on animal-assisted therapy, will give a special, horse-focused talk based on his book, “Our Faithful Companions: Exploring the Essence of Our Kinship with Animals.” He will sign copies of the book afterward. All book sale proceeds will support scholarships designated for the university’s students who participate at the horse center.

The Cal Poly Pomona Sunday Horse Show will begin at 2 p.m. The show is a tradition that started in 1926 when breakfast cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg began exhibitions of his beloved Arabian horses at his Pomona ranch in 1926. Kellogg’s ranch later became the site of the Cal Poly Pomona campus.

Today, Cal Poly Pomona students present the university’s Arabian horses in an entertaining and educational show, including the crowd favorite trick horse. The show lasts about 45 minutes, and guests are invited to tour the barns after the show. The shows are generally held on the first Sunday of every month during the academic year.

Admission and parking for the October festivities are free. The horse center is on Eucalyptus Lane between Kellogg and South Campus drives on the Cal Poly Pomona campus.
