Two apparel merchandising and management students won prestigious $5,000 scholarships after participating in a case study competition.

Amanda Borja and Jocelyne Kinjo were awarded the scholarship from the nonprofit YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund, which holds the competition annually.

This year’s competition called for developing a plan for the design, merchandising, analytics or supply chain component that is a partnership between a fashion apparel, accessories, footwear, home or beauty retailer/brand and a collaborator not currently in the business.

A fourth-year student from Montebello who was Cal Poly Pomona’s sole YMA Fashion Scholarship recipient last year, Borja proposed a design collaboration between Space X and Speedo to develop 3-D printed technical swimwear for the 2020 Olympics.

Borja, whose emphasis is in apparel production, will work in Kohl’s corporate offices after graduating in May.

In addition to the scholarship, Borja was selected to receive a new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop computer. The computer was provided through fashion designer Brandon Maxwell's partnership with Dell; Maxwell is a supporter of the scholarship fund and reviewed Borja's case study submission.

Kinjo, who is a senior in apparel production with an emphasis in international apparel management, submitted a case study where Adidas collaborated with Starbucks to create a sustainable line implementing fabric made from coffee grounds.

The Rowland Heights native currently works with a fashion industry company and plans to devote her career to companies and projects that focus on sustainability.

The YMA Scholarship Fund will honor Borja, Kinjo, and other recipients at its annual gala on Jan. 7 in New York City.

Apparel merchandising and management students have had a lot of success recently earning YMA Fashion Scholarships. Two years ago, four students were selected for the $5,000 scholarships.

Founded in 1937, the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund is the largest and oldest scholarship organization in the fashion industry, seeking the best and brightest students from around the world to lead the industry into the future.
