Urban agriculture students collaborated with two community organizations to create a new garden at a Pomona middle school.

The students were part of the PLT 4975.01 “Urban Agriculture Policy and Community Development” class taught during the fall by Rachel Surls, a plant science lecturer and sustainable food systems advisor for the UC Cooperative Extension in Los Angeles County.

They worked with the Institute for Public Strategies and My Pomona Community Garden to create a new community garden at Emerson Middle School in Pomona for use by local residents.

The students did community outreach, conducting focus groups to learn more how they could tailor the garden best for community needs. They participated in the garden construction and planned a Nov. 23 open house.
