Dietetic Intern Earns Honor

Stephen Degler

An organization of California nutrition professionals has named a Cal Poly Pomona alumnus as its Outstanding Dietetic Student.

Stephen Degler (’20, foods and nutrition) was chosen for the honor by the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. A La Verne native, Degler is currently in Cal Poly Pomona’s dietetic internship program.

He plans to pursue a master’s degree in public health and work in the healthcare field, combining nutrition and health care.

As an undergraduate, Degler made the Dean’s List, was a member of the Phi Upsilon Omicron honor society and was president of the Foods & Nutrition Forum. He also had worked as a research assistant on a project exploring probiotics and the gut-brain connection to determine supplementation effects on irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and anxiety.

In addition, he volunteered with a local hospital’s nutrition department, served as a community health coach that motivated patients with chronic illnesses to change their lifestyles, and interned at a local school district in their child nutrition services department.

The California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is a nonprofit association of about 6,500 registered dietitian nutritionists, nutrition dietetic technicians registered, and students committed to improving California's health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education, and advocacy.
