Q: Where did you grow up, and why did you choose Cal Poly Pomona?

A: I grew up in Yorba Linda and went to Fullerton high schools. I chose Cal Poly Pomona because they had a four-year nutritional science program. At that time in my life, nutrition and fitness had really become my passion. I lived in Brea at the time. So I could commute easily to the campus from Brea. I entered the program as a transfer student from Saddleback Community College.

Q: What do you remember most about your time as a student in the College of Agriculture?

A: Once I decided I was ready for a four-year university, I was committed and loved learning, the course work, the professors, the challenge and the drive that surrounded me. I learned so much and thrived in the Cal Poly learn-by-doing environment.

Q: How did your education prepare you and help you get to where you are today?

A: By far, my education at Cal Poly Pomona was top notch in every way. The learn-by-doing environment was a very important part of my success. Every challenge in my course work, labs and presentations gave me the chance for discipline and commitment. I learned I could succeed at whatever opportunities/challenges came along. Graduating as the valedictorian of the College of Agriculture was a huge boost to my confidence. I developed the mindset that I could take on any challenge and not have to be the smartest person in the room.

Q: What advice would you give to students today?

A: Cal Poly Pomona is a great university environment for education, diversity and good works for the community and the state of California. Getting your degree at Cal Poly Pomona will reward you in your career and life after college. You will become a better person and contribute to society. And please come back and support the university and help others achieve their goals and dreams to carry on that legacy Cal Poly Pomona has earned. Stay the course and push yourselves. It will be worth all of your hard work.
