Buyers from across the country are expected to bid Wednesday, Aug. 3, on eight Arabian horses born and raised on the Cal Poly Pomona campus.

The W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center is holding its second annual online auction of horses. The horses were among 12 foals that were born on campus three years ago. The center is keeping four of the horses and selling the remaining eight.

“Our students in ‘Foal Watch’ helped breed and foal these horses,” says Jeanne Brooks Abernathy, director of the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center. “In the fall of their 2 years old year, we moved the horses into the training barn to be trained.”

Almost all of the horses can trace its lineage and bloodline back to the original Arabian horse herd that cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg owned and raised on his Pomona ranch.

Last year, the center auctioned off 17 horses, including several older horses that hadn’t been taken to market before. The sale grossed nearly $75,000, which went to help support the horse center’s operations.

More than 300 people logged online across Canada, Saudi Arabia, Europe, and the United States to watch the two-hour auction run Oklahoma-based Addis Live Online, and 122 had the credential to bid. They included horse breeders, trainers, and individuals.

The purpose of the auctions is to provide the public the opportunity to own some of the finest Arabian horse blood lines in the world, while also making room at the center to accommodate younger horses, including the foals that are born every year.

Under state regulations, all sales must be conducted by public auction, which must be advertised for at least two weeks. Sale prices are based on fair market value, and the university must keep a record of all transactions, including the methodology used to calculate the minimum bid.

This year’s auction will begin online at 6 p.m. PDT.
