Grade Center Basics

How to Create a Column and Enter Grades

The following steps show how to create a single Grade Center column within your Blackboard course for the purpose of manually entering and quickly posting students’ grades. This tutorial is for those who do their grading outside of Blackboard, say in Excel, but now need to use Blackboard to let students know what their current status is.

If you want Blackboard to calculate a total or weighted total grade from multiple columns, DO NOT follow the steps below! Instead, please refer to LinkedIn Learning’s Blackboard Training.

  1. Navigate to Blackboard.
  2. If you’re not already signed in to CPP services, select the Bronco Login button and sign in with your CPP credentials.
  3. Click on the name of the desired course in the My Courses module.
  4. From the left menu, select Grade Center and then Full Grade Center.
  5. Select the Create Column button.
  6. Type in a Column Name. We recommend putting in a date to indicate that this is the students’ status as of that date.
  7. Under Primary Display, choose Text.
  8. For Points Possible, type in 0. Type in 0 no matter what “grade type” you chose in Step 6.
  9. For Include this Column in Grade Center Calculations, choose No.
  10. Select the Submit button.
  11. Locate the newly created column which is sent to the far-right end of the Grade Center (you may need to scroll over).
  12. Select the first cell under the newly created column (this will be the grade for the row of the student whose cell you’re on).
  13. Type a grade for the student into the cell and then press Enter on the keyboard to move to the next cell. Any of the following inputs can be entered into the cells:
    1. Letter grade (e.g., A-), this is based on your calculation and judgement of the students’ current letter grades (e.g., if a student currently has 85%, that would likely be a B).
    2. Numerical score (e.g., 80), likely the total points that students have earned so far.
    3. Percentage (e.g., 75%), this should indicate the percentage of points that students have out of the number of points that are currently available (e.g., if your course has 1000 points at the end of the semester, but you have only completed tests and assignments for 600 points, calculate students’ percentage from 600).

Note: To use Excel with Blackboard, you first must download the grade center from Blackboard into Excel, enter grades in Excel, and then upload that Excel spreadsheet back into Blackboard. Blackboard has very specific formatting for Excel. Learn more about using Excel for Blackboard grading.

Finally, make sure you explain to your students what the grade means for them at this point.

How to Make the Blackboard Course Available to Students

Your Blackboard course must be available (or visible) to students in order for them to check their course grades.

  3. Click on the name of the desired course in the My Courses module.
  4. From the left menu, select Customization and then Properties.
  5. For Make Course Available, choose Yes.
  6. Select the Submit button.
