Tom has over 30 years of experience in the university career services field. Tom has worked in career centers at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), Oregon State University, and Cal Poly Pomona. Prior to coming to Cal Poly Pomona, Tom was the Director of Career Services at Oregon State University for nine years. Tom received both a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Education and a Master's Degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education with a major emphasis on Career Counseling of College Students from the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus. As the Director of the Career Center he leads an outstanding team and is the liaison to the College of Engineering. Tom wants to provide the best programs and services for students and alumni.

Gabriel Carranza is the Graphic Designer in the Career Center. He has more than 5 years of experience working with companies such as Disney and Nickelodeon as a graphic designer and illustrator.

Lissa is the Information Desk Specialist at the Career Center.  She graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in May 2019 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology after transferring from Citrus College.  She worked as a student assistant at the Disability Resource Center for two years while working on her degree at Cal Poly Pomona.  Her work experience includes almost 20 years in the hospitality industry before going back to college.  Her previous companies include Disney, The Ritz Carlton, and House of Blues.

Caleb Garcia

Caleb has 8 years’ experience in Employer Relations and Student Services. Prior to his current role as Job Location & Development at Cal Poly Pomona he worked in various capacities within the Service fields. Caleb provides daily assistance to employers in person and on-line communication. Caleb also hosts employer visits to discuss hiring and recruitment needs. Caleb will also visit organizations to discuss potential opportunities for students and alumni. Caleb holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Cal Poly Pomona.

Xiomara Tapia, MPA

 Xiomara “Xio” Tapia is the Administrative Analyst at the Career Center. She is a proud Cal Poly Pomona alumna from the Master’s in Public Administration program where she currently serves on thesis planning committees. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communications and minor in Business Administration from Cal State Fullerton in May 2013. Xio is also an adjunct faculty member for the College of Business Administration at Cal Poly Pomona, teaching Business Communications.

She began her higher education career in June 2015 as a Department Coordinator for the College of Business Administration Technology and Operations Management Department. Her work experience prior to Cal Poly Pomona includes over seven years of small business management. In addition, she’s worked for nonprofit and education organizations such as KABC7 Public Affairs, TELACU Education Foundation, and Institute for Student Success.

Xio is passionate about career services and helping students bridge the gap between education and career preparation.

Gerry came to Cal Poly Pomona with familiarity and experience in the University environment. Prior to his current position as Recruiting Coordinator, Gerard worked at Cal State Fullerton as a Human Resources Specialist. Gerry is an Alumni of Cal Poly where he completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospitality Management and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. As the Recruiting Coordinator, Gerry is responsible for the day-to-day oversight, coordination, planning, and administrative support functions of the On-Campus Interview Program, which includes scheduling employers, students, and over 2,000 interviews annually. Gerry is also responsible for scheduling Employer Information Sessions and conducting Student On-Campus Interview Orientations. Overall, Gerry interacts with employers and students to ensure a successful on-campus interview experience.

David serves as a career counselor, liaison to the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences and as an instructor for the Career and Personal Exploration Class (CPU 1100). He has been a member of the Career Center team since 2006. David has worked in a number of capacities in Student Services, including Interim Dean of Students and Director of Housing at Hope International University, Residence Life Coordinator and Chief Student Conduct Officer for University Housing at Cal State Los Angeles, and Resident Director at Azusa Pacific University. He has a Master's Degree in Social Science, with an emphasis in Student Development from Azusa Pacific University. David's interests include hiking and camping, and a passion for California wilderness landscapes.

Ann Lara holds a joint position between the Career Center and The Collins College of Hospitality Management. She has been the Career Services Coordinator since October 2010. Her role is to work with hospitality students, bringing the resources and benefits of the Career Center to students at the Collins College. With two offices, it is convenient for students to get to, no matter where their class schedule leads them. Ann also is the lead for the Collins College Mentor Program and Collins College Career Connection on Blackboard. Her prior experience in higher education includes four years as a Recruitment/Placement Coordinator with teacher credential candidates and two and half years of service with Cal Poly Pomona as an Instructional Assistant. Ann holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Services, and a Master of Arts Degree in Education, with a Career Technical Option from Cal State San Bernardino.

Cheryl serves as a Career Counselor and Liaison to the College of Education and Integrative Studies and the Broncos Dreamers Center at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona’s Career Center.  She has a Bachelor Degree in Liberal Studies and Master’s Degree in Counseling along with a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and Pupil Personnel Service Credential from California State University, Fullerton.  Her Doctorate is from the University of California, Los Angeles in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling. 

Cheryl has 30+ years of experience as a Counselor and Teacher in all four Higher Education systems (UC, CSU, Private and Community) as well as the Public School and Non-Profit sector. She has worked tirelessly over the years to encourage and support students in successfully completing their degrees and finding a career path that is a good fit for them.   She is a strong student advocate and is committed to support students in and outside of the work that she has been involved with over the years.  An example of this is her work with California State Polytechnic University, Pomona’ Diversity Ambassador Program, sponsored by the Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers - African American Student Center.  This program educates students on the struggles this country has faced in providing equal rights for all.   A hallmark of the Diversity Ambassador Program is the Annual Civil Rights Trip to the South.   Dr. Love has served as a Facilitator on this trip helping students to become leaders in the fight for equality for all.  And has recently received the following awards for her work serving the Cal Poly Pomona Community:  Diversity Champion as part of the 25th Annual Unity Luncheon; Academic Advisor of the Year for the Student Affairs Division. And has assisted with an effort to bring a permanent food bank to Cal Poly Pomona as a member of the campus wide Food and Housing Security Task Force.  

Cheryl is also involved in her community through her volunteer work with the Inland Empire Chapter of the Red Cross in the Community Involvement and Outreach departments and her work with a food distribution organization, All Gate Way to Unity Baptist Church Food Distribution that helps to feed families throughout San Bernardino County.  And she is the recipient of the NAUW 2018 March Church Terrell award.  Mary Church Terrell was one of the original founders of NAUW in 1910.  She was an ardent activist for gender and racial equality.  The award is given to people who have a passion for working towards gender and racial equality and African-American mobility.  Cheryl continues to work to provide opportunities for young and old to reach their fullest potential.

DeVoneia L. Jordan is our new career advisor who will assist students in preparing for job interviews, creating resumes, and expanding the pool of internship opportunities.

Her experience includes working as a career guidance counselor in the Guardian Scholars Program at West Los Angeles College and as a lead facilitator of the Guardian Scholars Program at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. DeVoneia L. Jordan earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Cal State San Bernardino; and her master's degree in counseling with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy from the University of Phoenix. She is also an affirming associate marriage and family therapist that strongly believes in the integrity of her work, operating in an all-inclusive safe space. She will work in the Career Center on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursday mornings.

Cherrie is a Career Counselor and has over 15 years’ experience in the Career Center environment which includes Administrative, Employer, and Student Services. Prior to her roles at Cal Poly Pomona she worked at Cal State Fullerton in various capacities within the Career Center including Customer Service, Student Services and Events & Promotions. Her extensive knowledge of the many facets of Career Centers in higher education is an asset to Cal Poly Pomona. Cherrie provides daily assistance to employers, students, and staff by way of online tools, in person communication. She has also been awarded Outstanding Staff at Cal Poly Pomona for 2013. Cherrie continues to oversee the Peer Advisor program for the Career Center which provides students with Drop In Advising. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in American Studies and Master’s Degree in Psychology. She is the liaison to the College of Business.

Ed has successfully navigated the higher education environment. Because of his experience as a first-generation college student he brings a wealth of life experiences along with his training in Counseling to successfully assist students in the career planning process. He finds great pride in seeing students graduate and move on to rewarding careers, or higher educational training programs.

His other responsibilities include:
