More than 130 Years of Service Recognized

August 13, 2018

Eleven members of the College of Business Administration family will be honored for 130 collective years of service to the Cal Poly Pomona community on Aug. 20.

The Cal Poly Pomona Staff Council will be hosting the 2018 Service Award Ceremony where faculty and staff with 10 years or more with CPP will receive a pin to recognize the achievement. This year’s event is scheduled to take place in the Kellogg Gymnasium at the conclusion of Fall Conference.

All four staff members receiving a service pin this year are also CBA Alumni. Faculty honorees include a department chair and the CBA’s accelerated-MSA program coordinator. Brief bios of each are available below. A live webcast will be available for those unable to attend.

Dr. Hassan Hefzi is a former chair for Accounting and multiple-time recipient of the department’s Outstanding Faculty Award, most recently for 2013-2014. Prior to joining the CBA, Hefzi earned a Ph.D. from Arizona State University. The Journal of Business Cases and Applications recently published research he co-authored with current Accounting chair, Dr. Nasrollah Ahadiat, analyzing the collapse of a top BBQ island manufacturer.

Dr. Carlos Gonzalez has served as chair of the Management and Human Resources department since 2014. Gonzalez most recently played a key role in organizing Leadership & Diversity in Technology conference, a cross-discipline partnership with the Computer and Information Systems department to promote the hiring of more members of the LGBTQ community in the information technology sector. The May 2018 International Journal of Intercultural Relations includes an article Gonzalez co-authored with other MHR faculty looking at the relationship between multicultural experiences and creativity.

Martha Yanamura first joined the CBA as an undergraduate double-majoring in International Business Management and Marketing Management following almost 10 years with Verizon. The CBA alumna joined the Cal Poly Pomona team following graduation and rejoined the CBA in 2016 as an administrative support coordinator with the Management and Human Resources department.

Dr. Frank Bryant arrived at the CBA with a Ph.D. in marketing from New Mexico State University and teaching experience at Howard University and Salisbury University. Whether it be guest speaking at a Delta Sigma Pi meeting or coaching the 2012 American Marketing Association team to an honorable mention in its annual marketing plan competition, Bryant has become a student favorite. He even got to take center court during halftime of a men’s basketball game to receive the 2018 Athletic Department Faculty of the Year after being nominated by a team member.

Jeffrey Cox swiftly moved through the CBA’s ranks to his current position of Senior Director of Development. The Marketing Management alumnus has facilitated more than $20 million in philanthropic support for the CBA from individuals and corporations. He was a vital part of the CBA’s successful 2012 move into a new 75,000-sqaure-foot, three-building complex and important in securing five $15,000 scholarships for women interested in pursuing a career in information technology courtesy of Avanade.

Dr. Nancy Fan brought international work experience to accompany her Ph.D. in accounting from University of Texas, Arlington when she joined the CBA’s faculty. She served as a financial analyst with China Merchants Bank and accountant/interpreter with Mitsui and Company before heading to the U.S. where Fan’s research has been published in multiple issues of International Research Journal of Applied Science along with the Journal of Accounting and Finance and Pan-Pacific Journal of Business Research.

Stella Fong-Chen planned on a career with the Internal Revenue Service until a hiring freeze coincided with the completion of an Accounting degree from the CBA. A new path would choose her when an academic advisor role opened up and employment forms were completed alongside graduation paperwork. Stella says guiding students toward a successful graduation has been one of the most fulfilling parts of advising.

Dr. Meihua Koo wears many hats in the CBA beyond accounting professor. When she’s not teaching class or advising Beta Alpha Psi, the Oklahoma State University alumna with a Ph.D. in accounting is the coordinator for the CBA’s Master’s of Science in Accountancy program. Koo was profiled in a 2014 video highlighting members of the Cal Poly Pomona faculty.

Dr. Jun Meyers joined the CBA family after completing a Ph.D. from University of Minnesota – Twin Cites as an assistant professor with the International Business and Marketing Management department. She has volunteered for a Faculty Learning Community group, a team that launched a three-year pilot program aiming to increase interaction between students and faculty from different departments and disciplines.

Jacqueline Viana began with the CBA the October after completing her MBA. The college’s payroll and contracts analyst filled marketing positions in retail and medical between earning a bachelor’s in Marketing Management and returning for graduate school.
