November 21, 2022

Students during OC SMIF eventA group of Cal Poly Pomona students will manage an $83,000 portfolio as part of winning CFA Society of Orange County's Student Managed Investment Fund.

Under the guidance of Professor Pawan Tomkoria, CFAOC officials announced the  Bronco Asset Management (BAM) and SMIF team's first-place finish on Nov. 18, marking the third time in four years Cal Poly Pomona students emerged victorious at the annual meeting of area colleges.

With the win, the CFAOC investment portfolio nearing six figures will become the third account BAM and SMIF students manage containing actual assets.

Leading up to the event, students gained experience managing an alumnus' portfolio and will attempt to grow it during the remainder of the academic year. This was in addition to a permanent Cal Poly Pomona SMIF fund established this past summer and collectively, students will oversee nearly $500,000 of assets.

Backed by the Finance, Real Estate and Law department, BAM and the SMIF team receive tremendous support from alumni, faculty, students and staff. FRL representatives took top honors at another major collegiate event, the CFA Institute Research Challenge Competition, earlier this year.
