Applications will open October 1st for Fall 2025 enrollment

The Master of Science in Human Resources Leadership

The Master of Science in Human Resources Leadership (MSHRL) at Cal Poly Pomona is designed to develop the next generation of HR leaders for both the private and nonprofit sectors. This HR master's program equips students with strategic human resources management skills needed to create strong alliances across functional units, ultimately enhancing their organizations' competitive advantage. Our mission is to foster creative and entrepreneurial thinking that informs decision-making and drives innovation within the HR landscape.

Why Pursue an HR Master's Degree Now?

  1. High Job Demand in Human Resources

In the post-COVID-19 world, the role of human resources professionals has expanded significantly. Companies are increasingly prioritizing employee well-being and focusing on the human element of management. HR professionals are now essential strategic partners in organizations, making advanced HR leadership skills more critical than ever. According to O*NET Online, California alone sees 10,610 annual job openings for HR specialists and 2,660 for HR managers, with projected growth rates of 21% and 20%, respectively, over the next decade. This surge in demand underscores the immense value of earning a graduate degree in Human Resource Leadership.

  1. High Demand Among Students for HR Programs

California's public universities currently lack specialized graduate programs in human resources, creating a significant gap in the market. While several institutions offer undergraduate HR degrees, none provide a master's-level program with the strategic focus of the MSHRL. Only two AACSB-accredited universities in California—USC and Pepperdine—offer HR master's degrees, but they come with high tuition costs and are delivered entirely online, which may limit the depth of learning. Our program fills this gap with an affordable, in-person alternative that caters to the strong and growing interest among students. Surveys conducted at Cal Poly Pomona reveal a significant interest in a graduate HR program, with 51.8% of Management and Human Resources (MHR) students in 2023 expressing a desire to pursue an HR master’s degree.

  1. Affordability of CPP’s HR Graduate Program

The MSHRL program at Cal Poly Pomona offers a cost-effective alternative to other options in the region. With projected tuition for the 2024-2025 academic year at approximately $27,225, our program is significantly more affordable than those at USC and Pepperdine, which charge over $55,000. This makes our program accessible to a broader range of students, particularly those seeking a high-quality HR education without the financial burden.

  1. Industry-Relevant Curriculum in HR Leadership

Our curriculum is designed in consultation with seasoned HR professionals to ensure it meets the latest industry needs. It covers essential HR functions and emphasizes business acumen, leadership, agility, creativity, and data analytics. The MSHRL program includes eleven courses that directly address the skill gaps identified by HR leaders, providing our students with the tools they need to excel in today's dynamic workplace.

  1. In-Person HR Classes for a Hands-On Learning Experience

Recognizing the value of face-to-face interaction in HR education, our program prioritizes in-person classes. While online learning offers flexibility, it often lacks the engagement and community-building opportunities that come with being in the same room as peers and instructors. Our evening and weekend class schedules are tailored for working professionals in Southern California, allowing students to advance their careers without interrupting their current job.

  1. Experiential Learning for Real-World HR Skills

Hands-on learning is at the core of our teaching approach, with at least 30% of class grades based on experiential activities. Students will engage in community-based projects, offering consulting services to local businesses, which enhances their practical skills while supporting the community. We also provide industry events, career fairs, apprenticeships, research opportunities, and connections with regional employers to enrich the learning experience.

Who Should Enroll in the MSHRL Program?

The MSHRL program is ideal for:

Aspiring HR Professionals: Individuals looking to enter the HR field with a strong foundation in leadership, strategy, and industry-relevant skills.

Current HR Practitioners: HR professionals seeking to advance their careers, enhance their leadership capabilities, and expand their expertise in strategic human resources management.

Mid-Level Managers: Managers in any field who wish to transition into HR roles or integrate HR strategies into their current positions to improve team and organizational performance.

Recent Graduates: Graduates with a background in business, management, or social sciences (not required but preferred) who are interested in specializing in human resources and gaining the skills needed to lead in a dynamic business environment.

Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners: Individuals who want to build or improve their HR practices to enhance the growth and sustainability of their businesses.

Graduates of the MSHRL program can pursue various high-demand roles in human resources, including:

  • HR managers/directors
  • HR generalists/coordinators
  • Recruiter
  • Training Specialist
  • Compensation specialist
  • Benefit specialist
  • Department managers in any organization
  • Store managers

The MSHRL program at Cal Poly Pomona is uniquely positioned to meet the rising demand for skilled HR professionals. By offering a comprehensive, industry-aligned curriculum at an affordable price, our program prepares students to lead with confidence and make a meaningful impact in the ever-evolving world of human resources.
