Credential Programs

Preliminary Education Specialist Credential

Prerequisites 

  • Basic Skills Test (CBEST or CSET Writing)
  • CSET Exam (or subject matter program)
  • Early Field Experience verification (see Program Application Packet)
  • Certificate of Clearance
  • Negative TB test verification
  • Program Admissions Packet submitted
  • Letter of admission to the program
  • Attend a virtual orientation session 

Foundation Courses

Candidates must be formally admitted to the credential program or be a junior or senior at Cal Poly Pomona before they can take these courses.
  • EDU 5010  - Foundations of Teaching & Learning ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5020  - Foundation of Education in a Diverse Society ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5302  - Educating Students with Disabilities in Diverse Settings ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5100  - Introduction to Literacy Instruction ( 3 units)

Core Courses

Candidates must be formally admitted to the credential program before they can take these courses. All core courses require 5-10 hours of fieldwork. 

  • EDU 5105  - Language Arts, Second Language Acquisition, & Children's Literature ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5320  - Transition Planning Through Family & Professional Collaboration ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5322  - Law, Ethics, & Research in Special Education ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5324  - Educational Assessment of Students with Disabilities ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5332  - Positive Classroom & Behavior Management ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5334  - Multi-Tiered Literacy Assessment & Intervention ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5336  - Mathematics Instruction for Students with Disabilities ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5340  - Differentiating Curriculum & Instruction in the Content Areas ( 3 units)
  • EDU 5342  * - Curriculum and Instruction for Moderate/Severe Disabilities ( 3 units) - *Required for moderate/severe credential candidates only

Clinical Practice

Candidates must be formally admitted to clinical practice or the intern program before they can take these courses. 

  • EDU 5345  - Clinical Practice & Seminar for Mild/Moderate Credential ( 8 units)
OR
  • EDU 5346  - Internship Clinical Practice & Seminar for Mild/Moderate Credential ( 8 units)

                                                                                 AND

  • EDU 5351 - Clinical Practice Seminar for Preliminary Education Specialists ( 1 unit)

Additional Requirements

Credential candidates must also:  

  • Pass the RICA 
  • Have a valid (current) Infant, Child, Adult CPR certification 
  • Have verification completion of the U.S. Constitution requirement if not a CSU graduate
  • Complete the CSU Exit Survey (disseminated during clinical practice)
