The College of Education and Integrative Studies received $24,420 in scholarship support for its students during Cal Poly Pomona’s 7th Annual Giving Day.

Giving Day is a 36-hour online fundraising campaign that gives alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends an opportunity to transform lives and increase access to educational opportunities.

This year, CEIS surpassed previous fundraising efforts by 28 percent during the April 22-23 event, largely due to matching funds provided by alumni and supporters of CEIS.

“It is gratifying to see friends of the college stepping up to help our students,” said CEIS Dean Jeff Passe. “I’m pleased to see that they recognize the immense impact of their contributions.”

The majority of funds raised during Giving Day will go towards the Partners in Education Fellowship program, which provides fellowships of up to $5,000 to support future teachers enrolled in CEIS’s teaching credential programs.

Since its inception in 2005, 192 fellowships, nearing $1 million in much-needed financial support, have been given to promising students as they complete their studies towards a career in education.

Sue Johnson, superintendent of Savanna School District and a PIE board chairperson, said the funds raised during Giving Day will help the board celebrate its 15th anniversary next year by continuing to show unwavering support for future teachers in CEIS.

“I can't tell you what a wonderful opportunity this fellowship is for our recipients,” said Johnson. “It will make the difference between a recipient continuing his or her education and completing the credential program or not. It will make the difference between our recipients fulfilling their dreams of becoming teachers or not.  It will make a difference for countless children who will be influenced by each of our recipients for years to come.  We may never know how many lives we impact with these fellowship awards, but for those recipients and the children they will teach, their lives will be forever changed.”

Other programs that received financial support during Giving Day include the departments of Early Childhood Studies, Education, Educational Leadership, Ethnic and Women’s Studies and Liberal Studies.

"It means a lot to me as a first-generation college student that our alumni, faculty and staff come together as a family to care about their students,” said Yvette Millan, a liberal studies major who plans to become an elementary teacher. “It really means a lot that they want to help us achieve our dreams.”

CEIS hosts a large number of first-generation college students. Most need financial support to pay for their courses and cover their expenses. For these students, even a small donation can make a big difference. To make a gift, visit the CEIS donation page.
