Discussion Series Addresses Men, Masculinity & Gender Inequality

CEIS

A discussion series called Dudes Understanding Diversity and Eliminating Stereotypes (DUDES) Dialogues hosted by Liberal Studies major Arturo Castro in partnership with the Women’s Resource Center will continue to examine issues of masculinity and gender expectations on March 25 at 12 p.m. in the University Library, Room 4829.

The first event in the series was held on February 25 and included testimonies by men who spoke about the pressures of conforming to gender norms and sexual stereotypes of men.

“I really wanted to create awareness of certain things we consider socially acceptable and how that impacts others,” Castro said. “For example, a college department dominated by men may have an impact on the number of women who graduate from that department. Ultimately, my goal is to provide a space for men to discuss their views on a variety of topics.”

Castro’s discussion on March 25 will focus on gender disparities in academia, sports and education attainment. His final discussion on April 29 will be on men’s health.

“Research shows that a lot of men put their health aside,” said Castro. “At a young age, we are taught to be independent but sometimes you have to take a step back and realize that you can’t do everything on your own. It’s okay to seek help.”

All discussions will be held in the University Library, Room 4829 at 12 p.m. To learn more about DUDES Dialogues, contact Arturo Castro at arturocastro@cpp.edu.
