Professor Betty Alford, chair of the Department of Educational Leadership, will be presented with the International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership’s (ICPEL) Living Legend Award.

Alford will receive the award at the organization’s annual conference on Aug. 6 in Denver, Colorado.

She was selected to receive the award based on her service, scholarship and contributions to ICPEL and the field of educational administration.

Alford became department chair in 2018 after serving as professor and doctoral program director in the College of Education and Integrative Studies since 2014. Previously, she was department chair, professor and doctoral program coordinator at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where she garnered more than $20 million in educational grants and served as project director or principal investigator for each of the partnership grants. Prior to working in higher education, she was an elementary and secondary school teacher, high school counselor, assistant principal and middle school principal.

Her research agenda focuses on strengthening college-going rates among underrepresented students; studying successful school leadership in high needs schools; and identifying key practices for improving educational leadership preparation programs. She has presented at several national conferences including the American Educational Research Association, the University Council of Professors of Educational Administration, the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration and the American Association of School Administrators.

“Through the years, it has been a great privilege to work with IPCEL members as a national board member, on committees, and in conference presentations,” said Alford. “I am deeply honored by this recognition from colleagues who I respect and admire for their service to the organization and the profession and the difference they have made in students’ lives.”

The award will be presented during the 75th Annual ICPEL Conference at the Crowne Plaza Denver Convention Center from 6-8 p.m. For more information, contact Ashley Jones at 909-869-5370.
