Glendora Unified Selects CPP Alumna as Rookie of the Year

Damiane Riggs

Damiane Riggs, a new teacher who earned her education specialist credential from Cal Poly Pomona, has been selected by Glendora Unified School District as Rookie of the Year for exceeding the district’s expectations for first-year teachers.

“When I found out they chose me I could not believe it at first,” she said, “but I am also extremely flattered.”

Riggs credits her time in the credential program as having a huge impact on her success as a teacher.

“I learned so much in the credential program, I don’t even know where to begin,” she said. “I think the biggest lessons that I took away are how to manage my classroom, address behavioral issues and understand how to ensure inclusion for all students no matter what their background may be.”

After completing her bachelor’s degree in drama from the University of California, Irvine, she spent several years trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her degree. While going through her journey of self-discovery, she learned that acting was her passion but teaching was the right career for her. Therefore, she decided to apply to the Education Specialist Credential Program and was admitted in 2019.

While attending CPP, she was named a 2020-2021 Presidential Scholar.

“I really enjoyed my time in the credential program and all the relationship I formed with my classmates and professors,” she said. “Everyone at CPP has been so genuine and kind.”

One of the first individuals to hear about Riggs’ accomplishment was her mentor, Associate Professor Joanne Van Boxtel, coordinator of the Education Specialist Credential Program.

“We are so proud of Damiane and the good work she is doing on behalf of students with disabilities and their families,” said Van Boxtel. “She has been a stellar student in our program and it is was a joy to learn that her district has recognized her with an award. We wish Damiane all the best!”

Even after achieving early success in her career, Riggs is determined to accomplish new goals that she has set for herself as well as her students including continuing to promote inclusion and finding opportunities for her students to participate in school activities as well as making sure her students leave her classroom feeling confident about who they are and gaining academic, social, vocational and overall life skills that are necessary for their success.

“I could have never imagined my first year of teaching going this well,” she said. “I know I owe that to having incredible support from Cal Poly, my supervisor Rita Donato, my incredible professors, classroom aides, students and parents. The saying is true, it takes a village!”
