Assistant Professor, Liberal Studies

The Liberal Studies Department in the College of Education and Integrative Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant to begin Fall 2018. Candidates with specializations in the humanities, fine and performing arts or closely related degree are especially welcomed to apply.


The Position

Working with a multidisciplinary faculty, the successful candidate will teach Liberal Studies or interdisciplinary core courses, particularly integrated arts courses and a survey course in the humanities for our revised program on semesters beginning in Fall 2018. Liberal Studies major is the undergraduate major for elementary educators in California. Thus, candidates will provide an interdisciplinary education for undergraduate teacher candidates and General Studies students pursuing a liberal arts-based degree in disciplines related to their future educational paths or careers in fields such as law enforcement, social work, and health care. Candidates will provide Liberal Studies students a strong foundation in the humanities and fine and performing arts knowledge, including current trends in creativity and innovation, through student-centered and experiential pedagogy (e.g., service-learning). Instruction will focus on developing students’ proficiencies in critical thinking about and synthesis of humanities, arts, and social and natural sciences knowledge in order to understand age-old and emerging questions and issues relevant to our complex, global, informational society. Successful candidates will be expected to provide leadership in the department, and eventually, to fulfill university service commitments. The position requires teaching experience at the undergraduate level and evidence of professional and scholarly productivity commensurate with assistant professor status. Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in a humanities discipline or a related interdisciplinary field focused on fine and performing arts, or a Masters of Fine Arts focused on fine and performing arts awarded from a regionally accredited university before the start of position in September 2018
  • Evidence of scholarly potential (conference presentations, publications, grant development) and/or an active record of creative work (exhibitions, performances, professional design record, presentations).
  • Proven ability or potential for teaching integrative courses strong in critical thinking and academic writing, particularly in the humanities and the arts
  • University/College-level teaching experience
  • Experience or potential for teaching, advising and mentoring socially diverse students

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in integrative teaching across the natural sciences, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences using student engagement techniques and interactive pedagogies
  • Scholarship or teaching experience in creativity and its connection to wellness or well being
  • Experience in mentoring and advising students to pursue professional work related to humanities and/or arts knowledge and fields
  • Demonstrated collegiality and collaboration within a department, cohort or professional organization
  • Experience collaborating with faculty in other departments, colleges, student groups, and/or community-based organizations to share disciplinary expertise
  • Demonstrated strong ability or desire to incorporate educational technology and open source tools and platforms into the teaching of digital humanities and the arts
  • Experience in mentoring undergraduate research projects and/or scholarship in humanities and/or the arts, preferably some related to students with disabilities
  • Experience advising and mentoring socially diverse students
