Announcement

Summer Residential Camps Rescheduled for June 2021

In response to the public health mandates intended to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the decision has been made to reschedule our Migrant Education Program Residential Camps at a time when students will be able to fully benefit from the college experience by attending these weeklong programs on-campus at Cal Poly Pomona. Our residential camps will resume in June 2021 with many new additions to our program.

Exciting Online Virtual Camp Is Now Available!

The College of the Extended University is happy to announce that the Migrant Education Summer Program is coming directly into the homes of our students this summer!

We have transitioned our in-person Create Your Own Virtual Reality course into a Virtual Tech/Math Camp that keeps students engaged and actively learning as they gain new high-tech skills and develop their own hands-on projects.

The Create Your Own (CYO) Virtual Reality course has been developed specifically to meet the Math, English, and NGSS requirements for students enrolled in the Migrant Education Program.

Our online standards-based learning for 6th-10th grade students focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and includes high-tech subjects such as coding and programming, storyboarding, 3-D modeling, and creating your own virtual reality! Online camps will have daily interactive video lessons, at-home projects, and small group learning sessions.

This interactive eLearning course will excite, inspire, and engage students while they learn new skills, participate with other students, and gain insight into some of today's fastest growing industries from the comfort of their home!

What Is “CYO Virtual Reality”

Step into a new dimension by creating your own virtual reality! Discover, explore, design, and experience your own 3D creations in VR. Students will go through an interactive design process where they will literally breathe life into their environments through Blockly code. Every character will be programmed to move, fly, jump, whatever you can imagine! We've all heard of virtual reality but creating and coding it in person is an entirely different experience! After students have completed their realities, they will be able to use their smart phones (or borrow a parents’) to download an app and try it with a take-home cardboard VR headset.

Students will storyboard their ideas before coding their final ideas. This course weaves in math concepts, ranging from coordinate planes to introduction to variables. Students will use their math skills to help create counting programs and “lives” for their games. Student projects include: the maze game, escape room challenge, object manipulations, and a final project.

Total Hours*

  • 20 Contact Hours – 2hr/day over 10 days
  • 20 Hours of Math – integrated into interactive sessions
  • 12 Hours of ELA – integrated into interactive sessions
    • Remaining 8 hours to be completed with Teacher of Record
  • ~8-10 Project Development – self-paced projects for students to complete at home before the next lesson

*Course length and total number of hours of instruction can be adjusted to fit a one-week schedule if desired.

Available Program Dates

June 15-26, 2020                                                        July 6-17, 2020

June 22-July 3, 2020                                                   July 20-31, 2020

Student Enrollment

For the best student experience possible, we prefer to run our AM and PM sessions with a teacher to student ratio of 1:25. We can, however, accommodate a maximum of 30 students at one time if required. For larger groups, we prefer to run two parallel sessions in the AM and PM. By doing so, we can easily accommodate up to 120 students per week.
