Tenure Track Faculty Position: Linguistics/TESOL

College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in Linguistics/TESOL in the Department of English & Modern Languages. Cal Poly Pomona is one of two polytechnic universities in the 23- campus California State University system and among 11 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students have participated in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive and relevant and in which diverse perspectives and experiences are valued. With a variety of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn-by-doing approach and Teacher Scholar Model.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Second Language Studies, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. (Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position).
  • A commitment to and a record of contributions to student success through applicant’s teaching, scholarship, and/or service. This will be described in the Student Success Statement, which must address at least two of the inclusive excellence criteria listed above.
  • Ability to effectively teach courses in linguistics, research methods, second language acquisition (SLA), and L2 pedagogy as evidenced by prior teaching, teaching assistantship, and/or graduate coursework appearing on the transcript.
  • Ability to work productively and constructively with highly diverse student populations.
  • A viable research agenda and the potential for publication in the field of the candidate’s professional and scholarly expertise.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who demonstrate experience using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students and who are able to create an inclusive, student-centered environment for learning and mentoring.

As a blended department, EML seeks to expand its interdisciplinary connections in teaching and research and to further diversify the professionalization opportunities for its students. As such, evidence of expertise in ONE of thefollowing secondary areas is desirable but not required for a successful candidate:

• Familiarity with the field of Communicative Disorders/Speech & Language Pathology.

           OR

• Research and/or teaching experience in corpus linguistics.

          OR

• Ability to teach courses in the Chinese language and culture.

         OR

• Ability to teach courses in the French language and culture.

  • A cover letter, in which the candidate will describe their interest in the position, relevant experience in teaching, service, and research, and the ways in which the candidate meets the minimum qualifications in addition to any preferred qualifications.
  • A Student Success Statement (up to 2 pages, single-spaced) about the candidate’s teaching or other experiences, successes, and challenges in working with a diverse student population. Please address at least two of the inclusive excellence criteria listed above.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • A self-reflection on the applicant’s teaching philosophy and/or practices. In this document, the applicant should discuss their beliefs about teaching and learning, ideally addressing how these beliefs apply to a specific course (or courses) that the candidate has taught, if applicable.
  • Three recent letters of reference, at least one of which must specifically address the candidate’s teaching abilities and/or potential.
  • The names and contact information for at least three individuals who can serve as references. This list may include but need not be limited to the names and contact information of the referees providing the aforementioned letters.
  • Unofficial transcripts of all graduate-level work.
  • Completed application form on PageUp.

Finalists for the position will be required to:

  • Provide official transcripts for the highest degree achieved or in progress before the on-campus interview. 
  • Present research work to the faculty.
  • Provide a teaching demonstration in the classroom.
