CPP's Mock Trial Team ends a historic season with record wins and achievements

In mid-March, Cal Poly Pomona's 2018-2019 Mock Trial Team participated in the Opening Round Championship Series (ORCs) in Georgia where they ended their competitive season for the year.

Mock Trial Team 2019

ORCs marks the first instance where the team traveled to the southeast to compete in the against other universities such as University of Florida, Florida State University, University of West Florida, and Emory University.

The political science department is extremely proud of this year’s achievements and accomplishments. This was the first time in about five years that the team made it to ORCs.  As a comparison, 700 mock trial teams began the season, 216 teams made it to ORCs, and only 32 teams make it to Nationals.

The competition at ORCs was also extremely close to making the National Competition, which would have been a first for Cal Poly Pomona’s Mock Trial Team. Going into the last round, the team was at 4 wins.  They needed to win both ballots to qualify for the National Championship Tournament.  This was the most challenging round the team faced the entire season, because they competed against Emory University.  The team fought hard and only lost one ballot by 2 points and the other by 7 points.  We are excited for next year and expect to do even better!

Our team also won the most awards at this competition.  Emma Jue-Sans and Manshaan Singh won Outstanding Attorney Awards, and Kaitlyn Baltazar and Victoria Venegas-Gomez both won Outstanding Witness Awards.  Only the top 5% of competitors win Outstanding Attorney and Witness Awards.  We were the only team to win 4 awards at this competition.
