Social Distancing

One of the keys to preventing the spread of COVID-19 is social distancing. Staying at least 6 feet away from anyone that is not in your household greatly reduces the chances of transmitting COVID-19. Here’s why: COVID-19 is found in droplets that an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes out of their nose and mouth. The droplets can travel some distance before they fall from the air. So, if you stay 6 feet away from others, there is less of a chance that you will breathe in the droplets and become infected. Of course, if someone with COVID-19 wears a mask, the risk of passing the virus is even less.

The two most important ways to social distance are:
  1. Stay home and interact only with people living in your household
  2. Stay at least 6 feet (that’s two arms’ length) away from other people

Since most of us can’t stay home all the time, here are some tips for social distancing when you must be around other people:

  • Don’t shake hands. Find another way to greet people, like waving, and stay 6 feet apart.
  • Avoid crowds. Try to go out at times that are less busy.
  • Limit the number of people you come in contact with.
  • Limit the amount of time you spend in close contact with others.
  • If others are coughing or sneezing, stay as far away as possible.
  • Try not to touch surfaces when you are out in public.
  • Follow handwashing and mask-wearing guidance.
