As founding president of the Global Public Health Brigades and an architect in training, Kristen Ayap seeks to improving accessibility in the developing world through better design. Inclusive design became her calling while working as a camp counselor for students with medical conditions.“I would never want my campers to ever feel isolated nor their identity limited to their diseases,” she says. “Being an architecture student, I have the power and the ability to shape a more inclusive future and I have every intention of doing so.” She earned the Outstanding Student 1st Year Design Award and is exploring regenerative studies and the possibility of natural building solutions for sustainable affordable housing. With her CPP degree, she hopes to volunteer with the Peace Corps to better understand and serve under-resourced communities and work with an architectural firm focused on humanitarian design for local and international levels. “there is much potential to use architecture as a platform for social change,” she says. “Accessibility should no longer viewed as just another checkbox to fulfill.”
