Jasen Strand President’s Scholar

Major: Animal Science

Don B. Huntley College of Agriculture

University Programs: Arabian Horse Center’s Equestrian Team, Foal Watch Program

Kiannah Shalise Barclay credits being able to apply what she learned in the classroom to experiences in multiple university programs, which strengthened her desire to pursue equine therapy. Her passionate pursuits extend off campus: She serves in the Faith Warriors Ministry at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills; volunteers with her church’s young adult outreach events; and volunteers with the Equine Red Bucket Rescue, a local horse rescue rehabilitation organization. Kiannah’s faith keeps her motivated: “All of my success and achievement is owed to God. My educational journey is a constant reminder of God’s faithfulness to carry me through impossible tribulations. The knowledge that donors decided to invest in my future has humbled me greatly.” Her goal is to create an equine therapy ministry to serve veterans and wounded warriors. As the inaugural Jasen Strand President’s Scholar, Kiannah’s dedication to helping others and advocating for equal student access pays a fitting tribute to Jasen Strand, the son of Peter and Tina Strand who created this scholarship in 2010 and provided additional funding in 2020.
