William J. McKinney chose Cal Poly Pomona over other schools because of the hands-on opportunities it provides. “Mechanical engineering allows learning about materials, programming, electronics and how they all fit together to make something useful, and giving the current uncertainties, I do not know any other area that would allow me to make an economic impact while providing the flexibility to the changes that are sure to come,” he says. As a project leader in the CubeSat program Bronco Space, William designed a docking station to hold experimental devices that would be sent into space. He helped to draft an NSF grant, GEOPath, for the recruitment of underrepresented students in the geosciences, and support of Bronco Space’s expansion of its low earth orbit program. He also worked as Mechanical Lead for the Rose Float Club, where he designed a mechanism that was used on one of the unversity’s award-winning floats. William’s goal is to pursue his dream job of hands-on learning and experimentation as a product engineer.
