Dear Colleagues,
With just five weeks to the beginning of the academic year, we are writing to update you on our campus plan for the fall 2020 semester. Following Chancellor White’s announcement that instruction on CSU campus will be predominantly remote in fall 2020, each campus was asked to engage in a comprehensive process to identify specific areas for exception to hold in-person activities.
Our formal plans for fall 2020 were developed in accordance with public health orders issued by the LA County Department of Public Health, as well as orders from State Health Officers, including the protocols for higher education institutions and office-based work sites outlined in Reopening Safer at Work and the Community for Control of COVID-19 Order.
We are pleased to report that our formal Fall 2020 Campus Plan submitted last month and was accepted by the CSU Office of the Chancellor. The campus plan required details in the four areas of instruction, housing, dining and athletics which we have summarized below:
- Instruction. In addition to online courses in the fall 2020 schedule, we plan to offer 126 course sections with in-person components. This represents approximately 2.6 percent of the total course sections offered. Of the 126 course sections, 102 will have an on-campus component and 24 will have an off-campus component. We anticipate that roughly 669 students will have some in-person learning component this fall. Likewise, we anticipate that 92 faculty and 26 support staff will be on campus to teach and support students in these sections. As part of our campus plan, we submitted detailed plans on how we will accommodate students, faculty, and staff who, for any number of reasons, are unable to participate in in-person activities.
- Housing. University Housing Services and Foundation Housing Services were approved to house 500 residents between the two housing programs. For the safety of all residents, assignments will be offered to Renaissance Scholars (former foster youth programs), those students identified by the Disability Resource Center, Kellogg Honors scholars, international students and students experiencing housing insecurity. As space allows, consideration will be given to students that have a demonstrated need. The assignment process will begin the week of July 20th.
- Dining. Foundation Dining has also developed a detailed plan, in collaboration with campus Environmental Health & Safety, to offer some – albeit limited – campus dining options. Please visit the Foundation Dining webpage for the latest information regarding open dining locations.
- Athletics. Collegiate athletics contribute to campus engagement and pride but, unfortunately, student athletes will not be competing in conference activities in Fall 2020. The conference (CCAA) is currently developing return to play, practice, and competition schedules to possibly begin in January 2021.
Developing our plan for the fall semester was a major undertaking. We are grateful to the countless partners across the campus who were actively engaged in this process. We remain deeply committed to keeping our campus community safe while preserving the world-class inclusive polytechnic education that is our hallmark.
