Safer Return at Cal Poly Pomona

County and Statewide Orders Regarding COVID-19

Date: 3/19/2020
From: Office of the President
Subject: County and statewide orders regarding COVID-19

Dear Campus Community,

This evening, the County of Los Angeles issued a "Safer at Home" order in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. While this order does not apply to higher education, I know that this directive is concerning for our community. Further, Governor Gavin Newsom announced an Executive Order directing that all individuals living in the state stay home or at their place of residence except to maintain continuity of operation of the federal critical infrastructure sectors. This order went into effect on Thursday, March 19, 2020, and is in place until further notice.

We have already taken steps to significantly reduce the density of our population on campus. For our part, we are taking the following measures in accordance with the county and statewide orders:

  • A limited number of employees will be available on campus to ensure continuity of critical services, such as the University Police Department, the Student Health Center, designated residence halls, and the Centerpointe dining facility. Please contact your supervisor if you have questions regarding your presence on campus.
  • All virtual and remote instruction will continue as planned as well as some remote student services; however, all events and activities are cancelled.
  • As previously announced, the University Library will limit services to only those students needing access to computers or other equipment for virtual instruction. Strict social distancing measures will be implemented for those using the library.

Those employees designated by their supervisor as critical to maintain certain on-campus services and public safety personnel are to report as directed. As I instructed in my message earlier this week, all other employees should work with their HEERA manager to finalize a Temporary Remote Work Agreement. Staff should work closely with their supervisor to address expectations and individual circumstances.

Financial Services will mail paychecks to those not enrolled in direct deposit. If you do not receive your paycheck through direct deposit, you must make sure that your mailing address is correct in PeopleSoft by March 24, 2020.

I will keep the campus community updated as further information is shared from the County Public Health Authorities, Chancellor’s Office, and the Governor’s Office.  As these directives are lifted or modified, you should expect email notification from the university.

I strongly encourage you to regularly check our Health Alert website, where we will be posting the most up-to-date information and answers to frequently asked questions. Also, you can call our hotline at 909-869-2500 and visit Cal Poly Pomona’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts. Please confirm that your contact information — your mobile number, most critically — is current in BroncoDirect, which will facilitate communication to our campus community.

Thank you for your patience as we respond to this constantly evolving situation. Please continue to take of yourselves and others.

Sincerely,
Soraya M. Coley, Ph.D.
President
