Safer Return at Cal Poly Pomona

COVID-19 Notification

Date: 4/1/2020
From: Health Alert at CPP
Subject: COVID-19 Notification

First Confirmed Case

I am writing to share that a Cal Poly Pomona student received a positive test result for COVID-19 but has recently recovered and is no longer contagious. The patient has been cleared by their healthcare provider to return to normal activities.

The student was last on campus nearly three weeks ago on March 11, and symptoms consistent with COVID-19 appeared later on March 16. The individual self-isolated, sought medical care and was tested. They received the positive test result this past weekend and notified the university immediately.

What does this mean for me?

We are sharing this information out of an abundance of caution, as the university’s health professionals, county public health experts and the student’s healthcare provider do not believe this case poses a risk to our campus community. As testing increases statewide, we expect that there will be a corresponding increase in confirmed cases throughout our local communities.

Over the past few weeks, the university has been following guidance from county, state and federal health agencies, as well as the CSU Chancellor’s Office on social distancing, cleaning of facilities and equipment, and additional precautionary measures to protect our collective health and wellbeing.

Staying healthy

Physical distancing (6 feet from others), personal hand hygiene and staying away from others who are sick are the best ways to avoid potential exposure to the virus. Visit the CDC website for more details on how to protect yourself. I would also ask that all of us continue to follow the statewide Stay at Home order.

If you are sick
If you don’t feel well (fever, cough and/or trouble breathing), please contact your healthcare provider for medical advice. In Los Angeles County, testing continues to be limited and reserved for those who meet current testing eligibility requirements.

  • Students: Contact Student Health (909-869-4000) or your healthcare provider. Call the Health Center BEFORE coming so that we can make appropriate arrangements to minimize the potential exposure to others.
  • Faculty and staff: Contact your primary care physician or healthcare provider. Call the provider BEFORE going to the facility.

Mental and Emotional Health
COVID-19 has significantly disrupted all our lives, and it is natural to feel stress, anxiety or even grief in these situations. We are a Bronco family, and it’s important that we continue to support one another and take care of our emotional health. If you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, depressed or stressed, I urge you to seek out the following counseling and wellbeing resources.

  • For students, Counseling & Psychological Services is available. Students should call 909-869-3220 to set up a remote session. The 24-hour hotline is also available: 909-869-3220, press “2”.
  • Faculty, staff, their dependents and permanent household members may contact CPPLifeMatters by Empathia.

The university’s Health Alert website (www.cpp.edu/healthalert) will continue to share important news, announcements and resources. Questions or comments may also be sent to healthalert@cpp.edu.

 Stay well.
