Face Mask Protocols

Subject: Face Mask Protocols

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

I hope Spring Break provided an opportunity to recharge, and that you are ready for the final stretch of the Spring 2022 semester. In my first few official days as Provost, I am elated to see students, faculty, and staff engaging in the activities that make this university vibrant. I look forward to meeting you as I walk across campus, attend events, and celebrate your accomplishments this year.

I want to reinforce the messaging included in the Safer Return Task Force from before Spring Break and today’s Safer Return newsletter (attached). As of April 2nd, Cal Poly Pomona has aligned our mask/face covering protocols with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, which states that when indoors, masks are strongly recommended but not required. The safer return advocates are working on removing our mask requirement signage across campus to avoid confusion. We know there are many signs across the campus so please be patient as we make these changes.

As a reminder, faculty, staff, and students cannot require or ask others to wear or not wear a mask in classrooms, labs, offices, meeting spaces, and other indoor locations. I understand that this change in our protocol may cause feelings of anxiety and uncertainty -- for both you and our students. The campus decision to align the masking policy with LA county is based on science. I encourage faculty and staff who wish to wear masks to do so as their individual choice. In fact, I have made the choice to continue to wear my mask when attending indoor meetings. I am asking the campus community to please respect how others exercise their choices.  The university will continue to provide free medical grade surgical masks and KN95 masks

Thank you for continuing to provide flexibility in supporting our students and staff through the pandemic and enduring commitment to our Safer Return to Cal Poly Pomona.

Sincerely,

Jennifer L. Brown, Ph.D.
Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs
