Subject: Fall 2020 Plan - Student Information

Dear Cal Poly Pomona Students,

With just five weeks to the beginning of the academic year, we are writing to update you on Cal Poly Pomona’s plan for the fall 2020 semester. Following Chancellor White’s announcement that instruction on CSU campuses will be predominantly remote in fall 2020, we engaged in a comprehensive process to identify specific areas for exception to allow in-person activities.

Our formal plans for fall 2020 were developed in accordance with public health orders issued by the LA County Department of Public Health, as well as orders from State Health Officers, including the protocols for higher education institutions and office-based work sites outlined in Reopening Safer at Work and the Community for Control of covid-19 Order.

Below are updates to course instruction, housing, dining, and athletics for fall 2020.

Course Instruction

Fall 2020 courses will be predominantly online. However, we plan to offer 126 course sections with in-person components. You can find the list of these courses on the Academic & Student Services Support website.

We submitted detailed plans on how we will implement safety measures (i.e. physical distancing, cleaning, face coverings) to protect the health and well-being of the students, faculty and staff who will be on campus or participate in in-person activities. In addition, our plans include accommodations for students who, for any number of reasons, are unable to participate in in-person activities. If you are enrolled in a course with in-person components, you will receive additional communication about the in-person course and accommodations in the coming weeks.

We have received questions about wait-listing courses and how to get permission numbers from instructors in our virtual format. Please use the wait-listing function in BroncoDirect so instructors and departments can communicate with you about the specific section you are interested in.

Housing

University Housing Services and Foundation Housing Services were approved to house 500 residents between the two housing programs. For the safety of all residents, assignments will be offered to Renaissance Scholars (former foster youth), those students identified by the Disability Resource Center, Kellogg Honors scholars, international students and students experiencing housing insecurity. As space allows, consideration will be given to students who have a demonstrated need. The assignment process will begin the week of July 20, 2020.

For more questions about University Housing Services, visit the Housing website’s FAQs or email housing@cpp.edu. For more questions about the University Village, visit the Village website’s FAQs.

Dining

Foundation Dining has also developed a detailed plan, in collaboration with campus environmental health & safety department, to offer limited campus dining options. Visit the Foundation Dining webpage for the latest information regarding open dining locations.

Athletics

Intercollegiate Athletics contribute to campus engagement and pride but, unfortunately, student athletes will not be competing in conference activities in fall 2020. The conference (CCAA) is currently developing return to play, practice, and competition schedules to possibly begin in January 2021.

We have launched a comprehensive website with information about fall 2020 at www.cpp.edu/safereturn, where you can also find more information about virtual access to academic and student support services.

We truly appreciate your patience and grace throughout these past months. We are so proud of your resilience and unwavering commitment to your education.

Sincerely,

 Sylvia A. Alva,
Provost and Vice President, Academic Affairs
