Guidance on COVID-19 Travel Guidelines

(as of Aug. 11, 2021)

As we continue to navigate COVID-19 guidelines and requirements, we are sharing up-to-date information related to travel guidelines to help keep our community informed. Below are guidelines specific to LA County. Residents of San BernardinoRiverside, or Orange Counties should visit the respective County website for full information.

  • Travelers entering LA County from outside of California need to self-quarantine by staying home and separating from others for at least 10 days UNLESS:
    • They are fully vaccinated
    • They have recovered from COVID-19 in the past 3 months
    • They have no symptoms
  • Fully vaccinated travelers who return to LA County from outside of California and develop symptoms should isolate themselves and get tested.
  • Full details regarding home quarantine instructions within LA County can be accessed here.

CDC Recommendations

The CDC recommends delaying all travel until being fully vaccinated. Fully vaccinated individuals are still required to wear a mask on all public modes of transportation and should self-monitor for symptoms after travel. If a vaccinated individual develops symptoms, they should isolate and get tested.

Unvaccinated individuals should get tested 1-3 days before traveling, should seek a viral test 3-5 days after travel, AND self-quarantine for 7 days, even if testing negative.

  • Unvaccinated travelers who don’t get tested should self-quarantine for 10 days after travel.
  • Unvaccinated travelers should avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether tested or not.

Additional recommendations and requirements are required for international travel for both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers, including a mandatory COVID-19 test before flying into the United States. For full guidelines, visit the CDC’s website.

Individuals who are currently sick, have been exposed to COVID-19, or who have tested positive for COVID-19 should NOT travel.

As a reminder, the approval of essential in-person travel on behalf of the University is delegated to the respective Vice President for each division. For more information, visit the Safer Return website.
