Subject: New COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave

California's new COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave law (SB 114) went into effect on February 19, 2022 and is available, providing:

  • all employees, except work study students
  • up to 80 hours (10 days) of paid sick leave to use
  • between January 1, 2022 and September 30, 2022
  • when the employee is unable to work due to qualifying COVID-19-related reasons
  • leave is paid at the employee's regular rate of pay, not to exceed $511 per day and $5110 in total

The SPSL leave that the CSU is providing for non-represented employees is more generous than SB 114. Non-represented employees (except rehired annuitants, per CalPERS) may use SPSL leave through December 31, 2022 (instead of September 30, 2022) and there is no daily or total pay maximum.

Until CSU agreements on implementation of SB 114 are reached with the unions, represented employees will receive SPSL benefits consistent with SB 114.
