Safer Return at Cal Poly Pomona

Second Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Date: 4/17/2020
Suject: Second Confirmed Case of COVID-19
From: Health Alert at CPP

To our campus community,

The university has taken measures to significantly reduce the number of employees physically present on the campus and to provide those critical individuals working on campus with appropriate personal protective equipment. As confirmed cases in our region continue to rise however, I am writing to share that a Cal Poly Pomona employee has disclosed a positive test result for COVID-19. The employee is home following proper self-isolation guidelines.

The employee was last on campus on April 3, felt ill on April 6, was tested for COVID-19 on April 13 and received confirmation of a positive result on April 15. The university was notified yesterday, April 16, about the employee’s illness and positive test result.

Notifications have been made for individuals who may have had a close contact exposure (within 6 feet, for more than 10 minutes) and these individuals are following proper health guidelines.

In addition, out of an abundance of care and caution, the locations that the employee visited on their last day on campus (April 3) are being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected by a contracted vendor.

COVID-19 Notifications

Going forward, as testing for COVID-19 increases in the region and statewide, we expect that more people may receive a positive test result. With only a very limited number of critical employees and students in residence on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, mass notifications such as this will likely not be relevant to the majority of our community.

Should a student, faculty, or staff member notify us that they have tested positive and were on campus during the time that they may have been contagious, we will continue to work very closely with local public health experts and the individual to determine the locations they may have visited, as well as identify individuals who may have had a close contact exposure. However, we will no longer send mass notifications to the entire campus community when it does not apply to the overwhelming majority of people.
