Graduate Course Descriptions

Required Core Coursework (7 units):

These are required courses for all Chemistry Master's students

  • CHM 5520 - Advanced Chemical Equilibria and Kinetics (3 units - taken during Fall in your first year)
  • CHM 5510L - Advanced Instrumental Analysis Laboratory (2 units - taken during Spring in your first year)
  • CHM 5500 - Seminar in Chemistry (1 unit - taken two times: typically during your first and last semesters)

Elective Courses (17 units):

Elective courses at the CHM 5000 or CHM 4000 level, totalling 17 units can be selected. CHM 6910 (3 units) is required, and only up to 8 units may be at the CHM 4000 level. Not all courses are offered every year. See also the course catalog for a full listing of courses, and the course schedule for what is being currently offered.

  • CHM 6910 - Directed research (3 units)
  • CHM 5170 - Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHM 5270 - Advances in Inorganic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHM 5390 - Synthetic Organic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHM 5430 - Current Advances in Organic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHM 5400 - Physical Organic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHM 5610 - Advanced Topics in Biochemistry (3 units)
  • CHM 5810 - Instrumental Analysis (3 units)
  • CHM 4000 - Special Study for Upper Division Students (1 unit, but may be repeated)

Terminal Requirement (6 units):

The following courses are required to complete the Master's program.

  • CHM 6940 - Thesis research (2 units - taken two times: typically during your last two semesters)
  • CHM 6960 - Thesis defense (2 units - taken during your last semester)
