SEMINAR Modeling the Milky Way satellite system - moving from qualitative to quantitative

The Milky Way (and M31, the Andromeda galaxy) satellite systems have been utilized as tests of both dark matter and galaxy formation theory for decades. Despite this, solutions to classic problems such as the missing satellites issue are still not fully resolved. With the recent discovery of new satellite galaxies, it is important to improve our ability to model the Milky Way satellite system, and to use those models to extract quantitative, physical understanding from the observational data.
Dr. Benson is the George Ellery Hale Distinguished Scholar in Theoretical Astrophysics at the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science.
