Emerging solid-state phenomena at high pressure and small scale

First principles calculations are a window into the microscopic properties of solid state that allow us to understand the macroscopic properties. The recent development of structure search methods expand these capabilities by predicting the possible atomic configurations in domains where there is not enough experimental information, such as high pressure and small scale. In this presentation, I will show the causes of the radical changes in the physical properties of solid state matter that happen at high pressure and at small scale. I will explore the behavior of mercury as a transition metal and of cesium as a negative ion, and the remarkable properties of the compounds they can form.
