Teaching differently: Outcomes and evolution of a research-based introductory physics course
Nov 1, 2018 11:00 AM to Nov 1, 2018 12:00 PM at Building 8 - Room 241
In 2003, CSUSM adopted the UC Davis CLASP curriculum for its life science students. The course is different from traditional formats in a number of ways, including its content choice and sequence, pedagogical approach, assessment, and course size and scheduling. Over the course of its 15+ year run at CSUSM it has proven to be an excellent laboratory for understanding physics learning, and the pressures on curriculums and instructors in reformed physics courses. In this talk we will provide a candid discussion of the nature and evolution of this course as studied by a physics education research, including an analysis of the elements of the original curriculum that persist and what elements undergo modifications. Lastly, the talk will provide a more general structure for thinking about course change aimed at supporting physics educators considering adopting new curriculum.
