Students' Thinking about Energy and Forces
May 25, 2017 11:00 AM to May 25, 2017 12:00 PM atThe teaching of science in California K-12 schools is being guided by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which promotes science learning along three dimensions: disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. Two of the four disciplinary core ideas in physical science focus on energy and forces, and it is critical that students who aspire to become teachers have a deep understanding of these ideas in preparation for teaching science. In this talk I will briefly describe a physics course developed for prospective elementary teachers that is aligned with the NGSS. I will then show classroom video clips of college students working through a single lesson in the curriculum that follows a unit on energy and begins a unit on forces. By analyzing transcripts of the video clips we will gain some insight into how students think about learning in general and about the connection between energy and force in particular.
