Summer Bridge - Resident Advisor Application

Summer Bridge Program: 

The EOP Summer Bridge program is administered by Cal Poly Pomona’s Student Support and Equity Programs. It is a five-week (three-week residential and two-week commuter) program for incoming EOP students that assists them in making the transition from high school to the more challenging environment of the University.

Program Dates (Residential Portion): Sunday, June 30, 2019 - Thursday, July 18, 2019 

Resident Advisor Position

 Required commitment (no exceptions to any of these dates and times; hold your calendar for all dates):

SB RA Training Schedule:

  • Monday, June 17th – Thursday, June 20th 2019 &
  • Monday, June 24th – Thursday, June 27th 2019

SB RA training is every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

NOTE: Live-in required starting Monday June 24th at the Residence Hall

Summer Bridge Residential Program Component Schedule:

  • Sunday, June 30th – Thursday, July 18th 2019: Live in the residence halls (be on-call, on-duty evenings and weekends); RAs will trade off working weekends (Fridays – Sundays); the schedule will be determined by the Summer Bridge Area Coordinator (SBAC)
  • Monday, July 22nd 2019: Debrief and wrap-up with Summer Bridge Area Coordinator (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
  • Thursday, August 1st 2019: Summer Bridge Closing Ceremony (hold from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00p.m.) – Exact time will be confirmed during RA Training.

Note: There may be a possible job extension for the two commuter weeks (July 22 – August 1) of Summer Bridge for 1-2 RA’s pending programming needs. 

Job Responsibilities Summary (see below for expanded description)

  • Report to the Summer Bridge Area Coordinator (SBAC) and Coordinator of EOP Transition Programs
  • Live in the residence halls starting Monday June 24, 2019.
  • Be on-call at all times when on-duty; staring Sunday, June 30th 2019 – Thursday, July 18th 2019 at 11:00 p.m.
  • Monitor student discipline and enforce program regulations
  • Create, develop, attend and supervise residence hall activities and special programs
  • Provide guidance and mentoring (not academic advising) for student participants
  • Model positive behavior a tall times, promote tutoring, support all aspects of the program
  • Provide assistance with campus information sessions and recreational activities
  • Perform special tasks related to the residence halls as required
  • Perform all duties under the direct supervision of the Summer Bridge Area Coordinator


  • Cal Poly Pomona student
  • High work ethic; willing to engage in all aspects of the program, with the residence life team, and with student participants
  • Minimum Cal Poly Pomona cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Sensitivity and appreciation of students from diverse backgrounds, and ability to work with groups of 30-150 students
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, and perform tasks appropriate for the position
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to handle stressful situations effectively
  • Ability taking initiative on developing programs and coordinating student activities
  • Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues, work in teams, challenge self to form connections with others
  • Must NOT be enrolled in classes or have ANY other obligations during the periods of:
    • Resident Advisor trainings
      • Monday, June 17th – Thursday, June 20th 2019 &
      • Monday, June 24th – Thursday, June 27th 2019
    • Summer Bridge Program and wrap-up
      • Sunday, June 30th – Monday, July 22nd 2019 and
      • Thursday, August 1st 2019


  • Be comfortable with having a flexible schedule
  • Understand the schedule demands of residence life
  • Experience in residence life or equivalent
  • Flexibility and being comfortable with ambiguity; the schedule may have some minor changes after evaluation of the first days
  • Minimum of sophomore standing (36 or more units)


  • $13/hr. plus room and meals starting the 2nd week of training (Monday, June 24 – Thursday, July 18, 2019)

  • Selection of RAs is scheduled for Monday June 3, 2019 



  • Attend all RA trainings as described below: 
    • Monday, June 17th – Thursday, June 20th 2019 &
    • Monday, June 24th – Thursday, June 27th 2019
RA training is every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

NOTE: Live-in required starting Monday June 24th at the Residence Hall

  • Prepare residence hall for opening day (e.g., decorate halls, lobby, room boards, etc.)
  • Be on-duty all day on Opening Day, Sunday, June 30th  (assist with check-in, materials distribution, directing students and their families to various locations)
  • Attend and participate in the following meetings (meeting times are subject to change):
    • Staff meetings when students are involved in non-residential activities as determined by SBAC
    • Hall and Wing meetings: Sundays, 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
    • Meeting with Summer Bridge – days and times to be determined
    • One-on-one, SBAC meetings, to be determined by SBAC
  • Participate fully in wrap-up, debrief, and evaluation activities on Monday, July 22, 2019, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Participate in the Closing Ceremony – Thursday August 1, 2019 (Hold: 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; exact time to be determined)
  • Participate in all meals in the Los Olivos Commons (be present with students).
  • Assist students with adjustment to the community living situation of the residence hall and in making the transition to the University environment.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of residence hall programs. Taking initiative and organization is crucial.
  • Assist with conducting emergency evacuations and dealing with crises situations through immediate action and sound judgment if necessary.
  • Develop rapport with all participants and staff throughout the program (not just participants within wing assignment).
  • Convey openness and receptivity to all residents regardless of value system, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, age, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.
  • Be available and accessible to residents.
  • Exhibit patience with and acceptance of individuals.
  • Refer students to campus resources as appropriate.
  • Maintain staff and departmental CONFIDENTIALITY at all times, while maintaining student confidentiality when appropriate. Make referrals to SSEP staff as needed.
  • Use effective listening skills when resolving a resident’s problem.
  • Build a sense of community and develop a sense of belonging, unity, and loyalty among students.
  • Promote an atmosphere of cooperation in the hall with staff and students.
  • Encourage involvement and enthusiasm in all activities, while demonstrating personal interest and enthusiasm.
  • Model “good student” and ethical behavior AT ALL TIMES, ON AND OFF-CAMPUS THROUGH THE END OF THE PROGRAM, Thursday, August 1, 2019
  • Be aware of problems and concerns of students and be prepared to mediate conflicts as they occur.
  • Take steps to ensure that the students behave in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Consistently enforce policies and follow-up on violations according to established UHS, EOP and University policies; Notify the SBAC immediately of any violations of the rules.


All RAs are “on” every day of the program; however, “on-duty” responsibilities alternate during the program and on weekends

  • Two RAs are assigned to be on-duty at all times.
  • Being on-duty includes through the night (you may be sleeping during this time) and on weekends.
  • One RA must be in the residence hall at all times.  RAs must notify the SBAC (or RAs on duty) if they need to leave the building.
  • RAs on-duty need to carry the Summer Bridge radio, be attentive to messages, and be responsive to RA on-duty partners.
  • Ensure that all students leave the hall to attend scheduled activities.
  • Notify the AC immediately if any student plans to miss an activity due to illness or serious reason. Log time of call to SBAC, student’s name, reason (illness, injury, etc.), which activity(ies) will be missed, other pertinent information.
  • If someone is hurt or ill, inform the SBAC and follow procedures. If students feel ill enough to miss activities, they must be taken to the Student Health Center.
  • Complete an Incident Report no later than 1 hour after an incident occurs.
  • Take turns checking students in and out of the hall at the front desk between 6:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.
  • Conduct room-checks of all students between 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 a.m.
  • Check for messages at the Summer Bridge Program office, between 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. daily.  Distribute appropriately to Residential Life team.
